Diaspora (stylized as DIASPORA*) is considered to be an alternative to Facebook, is actually a free personal web server that supports social network services. The concept of DIASPORA* is pretty interesting, it is an open source social network and lets users to setup their own servers to host content. Soafer, one of the developer of Diaspora said,
"We don't need to hand our messages to a hub. What Facebook gives you as a user isn't all that hard to do. All the little games, the little walls, the little chat, aren't really rare things. The technology already exists."
The group has received the donation of more than $200,000 from
Kickstarter. One of the contributors is
Mark Zuckerberg who called this a "cool idea".
So, now when finally Diaspora* is going
alpha, we have got a hands on it, for testing and also bringing it to all other viewers out there to get a feel of it.
The main page after you click on the invite you have received is pretty simple and sober. Stating the main key factors Diaspora is based upon on the left of the page.
After you sign up, you got to make your profile.
What you'll get with it is a Diaspora email id (i guess so)
What makes Diaspora special is the thing called as
Aspects, this is where customization comes in. You can create your on aspects viz, work, family or anything you like, you decide the rules for it. (mind you, it is still alpha).
Then comes the part of social connect, definitely it offers you to connect to
Twitter as well as
Facebook.
So after everything is done, this is what you get as your final profile
We have for you a preview of the Diaspora profile
